Karl is a graduate of Vancouver Island University’s music program. As a student, he performed as a flautist with the Nanaimo Symphony Orchestra and in such productions as The Sound of Music, Antigone, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Handel’s The Messiah. He has also sung and played guitar in various bands and still does today.
His career history includes working in musical instrument shops and 14 years at Roland Canada, moving from sales, marketing, to webmaster (remember that term?). He then spent time as the Program Manager at the Center for Digital Imaging and Sound in Burnaby until 2003, when he moved to Kelowna where he joined the Centre for Arts and Technology Okanagan as their Campus Director. Since then, Karl has worked in SEO, radio advertising and music retail. Now retired, (or as he prefers to describe it becoming a full-time underemployed musician) Karl stays busy writing, recording and performing with his wife Gail in their band The Malarkeys. Their duo/trio project – imaginatively called Gail and Karl – and have been spotted around the valley performing with celebrated bluesmen Sherman “Tank” Doucette, Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne and Russell Jackson.
He and Gail regularly release new music online, and after fifty years of performing live Karl looks forward to contributing to the work of Creative Okanagan in its efforts to see a thriving, inclusive, connected and valued music scene in the Okanagan. www.gailandkarl.com
